Faith Leadership and Prostate Cancer
A message from Reverend Thomas L. Walker:
As a North Carolina Faith Leader, your voice can be extraordinarily powerful, life-affirming and life-saving to members of your spiritual community who are in crisis. NC men are in a serious situation when it comes to prostate cancer. Our state ranks 6th in the nation for prostate cancer deaths... due to our state's appalling health disparity, NC ranks 3rd in the nation for deaths from prostate cancer in our African-American men! There are some communities in NC that have the highest death rate from prostate cancer IN THE WORLD!!!¹
What can we do? Having personally been afflicted with this disease over a decade ago, I feel that God has called me to help blaze a path... to familiarize myself with this disease and its unique challenges... and to do what I can to help both my congregation and my peers within the faith community to effectively meet these challenges. Please, let us work together to do this good work. To help the many souls who rely upon us for direction and guidance, particularly during their hour of need. I share with you today the various initiatives I have put in place... feel free to use these within your spiritual home - and please contact me so that we may work together to carry God's plan for victory over prostate cancer for North Carolina families.
Brother to Brother
Shortly after my experience with prostate cancer, I extracted my personal experiences from my own journal in an effort to destigmatize prostate cancer and to relieve men and their families from the sense of isolation often associated with a prostate cancer diagnosis - and often magnified throughout the course of the disease.
Writing on the Bathroom Wall
Reaching the men during a personal time when they have a rare moment to reflect upon life, this campaign - positions posters in men's restroom facilities. Download the posters and help us spread the word!
EMPOWER (Empowering Men about Prostate Organ Wellness Education and Recovery)
This is my personal program. It is a guide for religious communities to create a spiritual home for men and their families, both present and future, who struggle with prostate cancer. The guide includes a training component for local outreach and awareness about prostate cancer for the general public, and guidelines for creating a supportive infrastructure for men dealing with disease within your church, temple, mosque, etc.
MaMa Why
A special play that uncovers the emotional challenges involved with coping with chronic (disease that won't go away) and/ or fatal (disease that will kill the afflicted) illness.
Sincerely,
Rev. Thomas L. Walker
